Reflection: Looking back at Global Learning

Updated: Mar 30, 2021

I started off at FIU back in August 2017. I remember I was struggling with classes because I was going through a tough time at the moment. I would spend my days thinking back at mistakes I made not too long before and wondering what I could have done to make the situation better. But as the semester went by, I began to meet more and more people. I made my first best friend at the SGA Internship. Then I made my second best friend. People came and went. But I never stopped growing. During my years in SGA, I met a global learning student, in which we got along very well. She was actually the one who told me to be just like her and join the program. I was so excited to try something new so I did. And the rest was history. I enrolled in many GL courses to get a better view on what Global Learning at FIU has to offer, and I loved all the classes. I got to know more about diversity and appreciate other cultures. I got to know more about how people's minds work because of this too, which lead me to work more effectively with teams. I used to always be very sensitive when I did not agree on a view with one of my peers but now after my years at FIU, I have learned that not everyone is going to agree with you and that is okay. I know that in today's world there are many issues that are connected such as military / politics / human trafficking. These are issues that go on every day and I am grateful for the courses I took at FIU that made me have a better understanding as to how they work. I plan to continue my life with an open mind to new global issues from around the world. When I travel in the future, from now on I will appreciate cultures and societies more.
